An excerpt from a very necessary Facebook postThe first degree murder of George Floyd, as well as the innumerable black lives lost to police brutality, is not nor will ever be a topic of controversy. The murdering of black folx is not something you get to disagree with. The murdering of black folx by your police system is not something you get to decide is justified because of their employment role...which paid for by the people, including the black ones they kill.
Your love shall not be conditional due on the form of which people protest these injustices. To say you disagree with rioting, looting, and damage to property, is your white privilege conveniently blinding you to the hypocrisy of your white history of enslaving black people and treating them as such property. To disagree with rioting and looting is simply choosing the side of the oppressor that values inanimate possessions over the human right of BEING ALLOWED TO LIVE. It didn’t become a controversial topic until you saw blackness. Do not let that cloud your judgement; black people are literally saying “don’t kill us,” and you’re saying “but...” To question why rioting is effective is to ignore why the value of LIFE is worth rioting for. You have never had to fight for to breathe due to the pigment of your flesh; your oppressive ‘opinions’ that reflect your ignorance and lack of empathy is invalid, and they should be silenced during times of national uproar due to the racial injustices you don't' understand. Your voices that lack solidarity have no room here. It is not your time to fight. All lives can't matter until black lives do. Please check your pale pigmented privilege at the door. Consider: the reason you don’t understand why people riot is part of the problem that led them to riot. And while I have you, I wanted to say happy pride month by acknowledging the hard work and activism of Marsha P. Johnson. Without the black trans lives that endlessly fought for their lives, LGBTQ rights would not be what they are today. Remember (or first educate yourself), the first pride was a riot-- a language that peaceful protests simply cannot speak. Without black voices, our queer community would not stand so proudly. Happy pride. #blacktranslivesmatter #blacklivesmatter
